Strawberry Moon

Strawberry Moon (A letter to the Moon) Hello Luna! How are you? Happy summer! How have you been? You have been in the news a great deal over the last week. Have your ears been burning? The news has been reporting about you for over a week now. When you went into your full state on Monday night, it was supposed to be a sight to behold. Astronomers said it was a rarity to see you that day, because it was the summer solstice.  I also heard that to see you on Monday night would be rare because you would have a rose colored hue in the nighttime sky. It was said that this phenomenon was rarer than a blue moon-when you show two full moon phases in one month. That must be where that idiom comes from, “once in a blue moon.” I was so looking forward to seeing you on Monday night. But, it was not to be. The day had been dark and stormy; the night proved to be so as well. The sky was full of clouds. There was no way I could see you. But I saw you the next night. I couldn’t b

Pulse

There are times in my life of being a writer when I feel I must write. I must speak about what has occurred. Not doing so feels irresponsible. This is one of those times, when I simply must write. June is the time of the LGBTQ pride events, a time when members of the LGBTQ community get together for week long festivals, often culminating with a parade. This past Sunday, the U.S. awoke to learn that in the early hours of the morning, there had been a mass shooting at a gay night club in Orlando, Florida called Pulse. *An important note, in discussing this horrific act of violence, I will refer to the man who did this as “the gunman.” I will not mention the man’s

Change can be a horrible thing. The idea of change is often accompanied by a sense of dread. It is difficult for people to change. When someone has to learn a new routine, or do something new, it can be a very stressful time. The simplest change can make us feel awkward, uncomfortable. For example, last month, the photo sharing service Instragram changed its logo.... ....which instantly made people uncomfortable… http://www.cnn.com/2016/05/12/health/instagram-new-logo-change/index.html I am not particularly fond of change. There is a saying, “If it is not broken, do not fix it.” In other words, if things are working well the way they have in the past, why change? Yet, where would the world be if we did not change? If we truly resisted change we would be still be talking on the original Alexander Graham Bell telephone… https://www.wired.com/wp-content/uploads/archive/images/article/full/2008/03/alexander_graham_bell_500px.jpg ….or driving the Henry Fo
