Endless Adventure

Endless Adventure 9-27-26

As I have shared before, my life has been atypical of late. It all began before on my trip to see family. I had feelings of impending doom, mixed with feelings of existential dread. It usually hit me around 2am, which had a negative impact on my sleep and energy levels.

I finally had to have a “come to Jesus” talk with myself. I had to tell myself, “You will be fine in this trip. You will be fine on the airplane. You will be safe on your trip. You are safe. You will be safe when you travel. You’re going to be fine.”

I went on my trip, which happened without incident. It was a great relief to be back home, back with my cat Blues, and in my own bed. I caught a he’d cold on my flight home, of course. Thankfully, I was on vacation from work that week; I was free to be sick at home, and wouldn’t get anyone else sick. I took over the counter medication at night, to be able to finally get some sleep.

It was in those days that I began to sleep through the night again, for the first time in weeks. I then began to experience a fascinating side effect to a better quality of sleep: I began dreaming again.

*

Maybe I’ve always dreamt and haven’t been aware of it. However, I’m now having numerous dreams every night, and can actually remember them.

In one dream, my favorite artist came to my library and read stories to the people in attendance. I stood across the library, taking in the scene, observing everything happening. I wanted to approach him and talk to him. Yet, I was too starstruck to dare to speak.

In mother dream, I was driving in a shiny brand new red car. I was driving home from somewhere familiar to me. However, all of a sudden, I found myself on a long and winding road that I did not recognize. As the road continued to weave downhill, full of twists and turns, my car began to increase speed. As the car continued to speed up, I suddenly found myself on the track of a roller coaster.

My car began the torturous incline towards the top of the roller coaster track. I was terrified, locked into the roller coaster track, completely powerless to change my fate.

When I got to the top of the roller coaster, I began to plummet down the track. However, amidst the horror of the moment, my car suddenly raised off the track, and began flying through the air. It was like a scene out of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”, or at the end of “Grease” when Danny and Sandy sail off into the clouds.

Like in these movies, I didn’t land back on Earth in a fiery crash; instead I sailed into the sky, completely unharmed, safe and well.

These are but two of the dreams I’ve had over the past few weeks. It’s the weirdest thing to experience, after not having experienced it in quite some time: to wake from a dream and actually remember what the dream was.

When the dreams happen, they do feel like dreams. They’re not ultra-vivid dreams, like reality. I know I’m in the dream space while it’s happening. Still, it boggles the brain, to reset from the dream I’ve just had.

I don’t know how to explain what’s happening, why I’m dreaming all of a sudden, when I haven’t been doing so, to my knowledge, for quite some time. It’s almost as if my brain is turning on when I go to sleep, just when my brain should be turning off.

Perhaps the definition of a dream: a movie that your brain generates when your brain turns on as you’re sleeping.

And of course, the only thing I can attribute this to is more sleep-or deeper sleep-or more meaningful sleep.

That’s a wonderful thought, or realization: every night, upon entering the realm of sleep, an endless adventure awaits.
