The Wolf Moon
This past Christmas I was given an
unusual gift: a pendant with a photograph of the moon on it. More specifically,
the pendant has a picture of the moon phase on the night I was born.
Along with the pendant, I received a card
which revealed the traits indicative to a person born under that moon phase.
Reading the card, and the personality traits contained, it was completely staggering to me. Every
trait was true. It was more accurate than any personality test has ever been.
It felt like I was reading a card all about me.
Much like horoscopes, every phase of the
moon has personality traits that accompany it. This brought to mind the full
moon. Every month on the calendar has a different full moon, with a different
name and personality traits attributed to them.
The full moon for the month of January is
known as the Wolf Moon. When the moon is full in the winter months, moonlight
shines down on the snow, which reflects the moonlight back into the nighttime
sky. This makes it exponentially easier for wolves to hunt at night. Their hunting
in the winter months increases, as wolves come out to hunt in greater numbers.
We can learn a great deal from the wolf. They
are remarkably similar to humans, in a number of ways. Firstly, each wolf has
its own unique personality. Some are leaders, some are followers; some are
social in nature, while some are loners.
Known for being especially crafty and cunning,
wolves rely on their instinct and intuition as they hunt.
Wolves are also social animals, establishing
packs, or a family unit. They hunt with their pack, eat within the pack, and
cluster together with other pack members while sleeping. Wolves play with their
young, express love and affection for one another, and they mourn their dead.
With the beginning of the New Year, as we
asses our lives, make plans for the future, dream new dreams, look to the full January
moon, and think a moment about the wolf. Let us use our craftiness and cunning to think of and bring about endless possibilities. Let us be fearless in making our hopes and dreams come true. Let us rely on our instincts and
intuition in the year to come, to guide us and to keep us safe.
And feel free to howl at the moon. I always howl at the full moon. It is fun and cleansing for the soul.
