The Dream State
Every night when I go to bed, I settle in
and I begin to pray.
Lord, I thank you for this day.
I then review the day I have had, the good,
the bad, and the ugly. My thoughts then focus on the day to come, and what I
will need to accomplish.
It is at that point that I begin to drift
into sleep, into subconsciousness. Between sleep and wake, I enter the dream
state.
It
is in the dream state that I often have my highest level of creativity, receive
the most inspiration. Thoughts, ideas, concepts, words, phrases enter my mind,
in a whirlwind of activity. I do not know if my brain has created these things,
or if these things have been given to me.
When I wake, I remember some thoughts from
the dream state. My usual pattern is to think about them for a few days, try to
remember that state, review the thoughts, and wait to see a clearer picture.
Once the thoughts have aligned, I begin to write. If the thoughts do not align
on paper, I leave the piece and come back to it later.
Not everything from the dream state is
retained. I have written poems, even songs in the dream state, complete with
verses and melodies. In the rare times that this happened, in the morning, the
poems and songs were gone. I remember that they happened, yet I cannot retain
them.
Perhaps those lost thoughts and songs will
come back to me, in another dream state. Maybe I should keep a pen and paper by
my bedside, to write things down. A dream state journal.
What do I write and share here? Poems?
Writings? Blog entries? Perhaps. However, maybe, more succinctly, contents of
the dream state.
